Thanksgiving is a fun holiday where everyone gathers and eats delicious food. You might want to involve in your horse in the festivities and give them a special feast of their own! Believe it or not there is a lot of food that horse can eat that are available at any grocery store, but beware some things are not good for horses and should never be ingested. Here is a quick guide of fun people food that your horse can enjoy, as well as some that they shouldn’t enjoy.
Safe Foods
- Fruits– Apples and applesauce, bananas, melons, grapes, strawberries, and dried fruits such as rainsans.
- Vegetables– Carrots, celery, pumpkins, and snow peas.
- Peppermints
- Baking Supplies– Flour, sugar, brown sugar, honey, molasses, frosting, butterscotch, food coloring, corn oil, and corn syrup
- Ginger Snaps
- Ice Cream Cones
- Beer
- Nuts and Seeds– Sesame seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, and peanuts
- Pretzels
- Oats and Bran
Unsafe Foods
- Vegetables– Brussel sprouts, kale, and anything from the cabbage family
- Meat
- Chocolate

Always consult a veterinarian or equine nutritionist before feeding your horse anything outside of it’s regular diet. It’s possible for horses to have allergies just like people so be mindful of this when giving anything to a horse. Horses have a very sensitive gut so if you start introducing new foods be aware of how it might affect your horse. Everything in moderation is important to consider when giving horses foods that are high in sugar such as molasses as that could cause metabolic diseases or symptoms.
