Summer Hoof Care: Keeping Your Horse Sound in Dry and Humid Conditions

Summertime Hoof Care

As temperatures rise during the summer months, horse owners face unique challenges in maintaining healthy hooves. Whether you’re dealing with dry, cracked hooves in arid climates or battling soft, thrushy feet in humid regions, proper hoof care is essential to keep your horse sound and comfortable. Here are some key strategies and product recommendations to help manage hoof health in both dry and humid conditions.

Dry, Arid Climates: Combat Cracks and Brittleness

In dry environments, hooves tend to lose moisture, becoming brittle and prone to cracking. This can lead to discomfort, lameness, and potential infection if left unchecked. To prevent this:

  1. Hydration is Key: Encourage your horse to drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet rich in biotin, methionine, and zinc to promote strong hoof growth.
  2. Regular Soaking: If natural moisture is scarce, consider soaking your horse’s hooves a few times a week. Using a shallow tub or hoof boot filled with water for 15–20 minutes can help reintroduce moisture. Alternatively, some owners create a shallow basin in an outdoor area around their horse’s water trough to allow them to soak their feet multiple times during the day while coming to drink.
  3. Hoof Moisturizers: Apply a high-quality moisturizer or conditioner to allow the hoof to transfer moisture, create suppleness, prevent cracking and protect against further drying.
Hoof Moisture, with the finish it produces, is perfect for shows in breeds that don’t allow hoof products to cover or hide the hoof. It is also clear and non-staining on white legs.

Doc Groom recommends Healthy HairCare’s Hoof Moisturizer.  This non-staining, clear, hoof conditioner includes both eucalyptus and lanolin, it utilizes a unique delivery system that works symbiotically with the hoof’s natural flow by allowing the normal expansion and contraction of the hoof to transfer moisture both in and out.

Perfected and proven by hard-working horses for over 100 years. Worked Then – Works Now!

Another Doc Groom favorite is Old Timer’s Hoof Dressing, a century-old formulation developed by the Pennsylvania Amish that includes pine tar and flax seed oil which readily absorbs into the hoof wall to protect the hoof from drying and cracking. A great solution for hardworking hooves.

  1. Routine Trimming: Work with a knowledgeable farrier to maintain proper balance and prevent cracks from worsening. Trimming intervals may need to be shortened during extreme dry periods.

Humid Climates: Guard Against Soft Hooves and Thrush

In hot and humid regions, hooves may absorb too much moisture, leading to softness, flaring, and an increased risk of bacterial and fungal infections like thrush.

  1. Dry Hooves Daily: After baths, rain, or turnout in wet or soggy pastures, make sure to dry your horse’s feet thoroughly. Pick out hooves at least once daily to remove debris and manure.
  2. Hoof Hardeners: Use topical hoof hardeners to reinforce the hoof wall and sole without trapping moisture inside.
  3. Hoof Conditioners: Even in humid conditions, a good hoof conditioner will benefit a horse’s hooves. Hooves can get dry during warm months, so there may be periods of time where a hoof conditioner may be necessary in humid weather.
  4. Thrush Prevention: Regularly apply antibacterial and antifungal products directly onto the bottom of your horse’s foot, paying particularly close attention in and around the frog-area if your horse is prone to thrush. Ensure bedding is clean and dry to reduce any microbial buildup.
  5. Ventilation and Drainage: Ensure your horse’s living area is well-ventilated and properly drained. Wet, dirty stalls are a breeding ground for bacteria that can further compromise hoof health.

Universal Summer Hoof Care Tips

  • Consistent Farrier Care: Schedule regular trims every 4–6 weeks, regardless of climate. Proper hoof balance helps avoid long-term structural issues.
  • Observe and Act Early: Catching changes in hoof condition early can prevent more serious issues down the road. Watch for cracks, softness, odor, or uneven wear.
  • Protective Footwear: In extreme conditions, consider using hoof boots to shield your horse’s hooves during turnout or riding.
  • Appropriate Hoof Care Products: Utilizing hoof care products including hardeners and moisturizers will be of benefit depending on environmental conditions.

By tailoring your approach to your local climate and using the right products, you can help your horse maintain strong, healthy hooves all summer long. A proactive and informed hoof care routine is the best defense against seasonal challenges.
