In’s and Out’s of Liniment

Gorgeous horse barrel racing

Everyone can say they’ve been sore after a good ride, but it’s not only people that get sore, horses do too. That’s why it’s important to look out for your horse and offer some relief after a workout. Liniment is a popular way to help ease the soreness commonly experienced after an intense ride.

How it Works

Liniment works by penetrating to the soft tissues and increasing blood flow in the area. The increased blood flow helps move recovery nutrients around the body while also removing the acids that cause soreness in the first place. Eliminating these acids leads to a faster recovery time and aids in the healing of torn tissues. Keep in mind that liniment is not a fix all for any soreness or general aches and pains. If your horse has continued soreness it might be necessary to consult your veterinarian to ensure nothing more serious is going on.

Different Ways to Use it

Liniment can take on a few different forms depending on how you want to use it. The most common form is a concentrated gel or lotion that you rub on the area you want to aid. This can be accompanied by applying a bandage over the area with something breathable to increase the effects of the liniment. Another common way to use liniment is for when you want to use it as a full body cool down for overall recovery. Diluted liniment is simply liniment mixed with water or soothing shampoo. This is a great treat for your horse, especially on hot days.

Important to Note

It’s incredibly important to read the labels of the liniment you get so you can determine which one is best for your horse. Some liniments are stronger than others and can blister the skin if they’re left on for too long. Pay close attention to the directions for use as well. Certain types of liniments are not recommended for use when wrapping while others work better when wrapped. For your horse’s safety it’s important to know that all liniments are not created equal.

The use of liniment needs to be a staple in your routine when your horse is in work. Your horse will thank you for it.
